Two simple questions about the Facebook privacy leak
I wrote the below in response to another article about the Facebook private message SNAFU, but the site then forced me to register. So I’m sharing it here instead.
A couple of things people are ignoring here. Given the level of Timeline paranoia when it first came up, don’t you think out of 800 million users, someone would have noticed this when scanning back through the years? Why has it surfaced just now?
My theory is that some messages between 2007 and 2009 were miscategorized. I can confirm that in my download of all Facebook data in 2011, these private posts were mixed in with the wall ones, giving Facebook’s claims some cred. However, they never showed up in my annual summaries on Timeline till now, since I had checked them all last year.
The other question one has to ask is: why and how did 500 million Facebook users suddenly wise up to private messaging at the dawn of 2010?
