When the sun had not set Lovely traditional typography (not just the English). Say what you will about the Empah, but they did leave behind some nice signage.

ICC Up close. Breathtaking. #hongkong #hk #kowloon #elements #skyscrapers #buildings #architecture #icc #internationalcommercecentre #theritz #asia #tallest (Taken with Instagram at International Commerce Centre)

Upwards Great view of the International Commerce Centre in Kowloon. That’s 1,588 ft heading up, but it’s still shorter than Taipei 101.

Looks bigger at this angle To an old HKer like me, the Connaught Centre is still iconic. I went there once in 1976.

quote

But the British have never made convincing warmongering colonial imperialists. If the residents of the Falklands decided that they want to become part of Argentina, the British would immediately agree, apologise profusely and make everyone a nice cup of tea.

Whiter than white In the Mirror tabloid today. What uninformed bollocks.

Try telling that to the people of Hong Kong, many of whom feared just what would happen after 1997.

Granted, there was a lease agreement for Kowloon and the New Territories, and good arguments for territorial contiguity—but, then, maybe the latter could be made for the Falklands?

The few Hong Kong Brits that cling on to their burgundy passports are denied entry as British subjects at Waterloo station—because of the FCO’s insistence on apartheid. All British subjects, you see, are not created equal, if you have yellow skin.

Never mind that Hong Kong military personnel gave their lives in the Falklands as well as in WWII for the sovereign.

And how many embassies and high commissions will actually help these British overseas nationals?

There may be some principles at play here, but they sure aren’t colourblind. The media may find it convenient to fly the flag here, but they don’t do it anywhere near often enough.

Now, as to the Gurkhas …

Hong Kong side As a boy, I was always more familiar with Kowloon than Hong Kong Island. This trip, I decided to reacquaint myself with the Island—nothing like a walkabout to get to know some landmarks.

Colonial Building - Helena May Hong Kong

The sun hadn’t set Say what you will about the Poms being in charge, they had left some nice architecture that’s more personal than most of the high-rises in the place.
